Course Objectives

  • Identify key mental health challenges that are specific to South Asians in Canada, including the impact of migration and assimilation
  • Describe how Western medical models of mental health may conflict with collectivist cultural perspectives and assess the impact of these misalignments on client engagement and treatment effectiveness
  • Explain the impact of intergenerational trauma on South Asian youth and adults
  • Recognize common health care provider biases and assumptions that arise when working withSouth Asian clients, and develop strategies to mitigate them
  • Apply a culturally informed, holistic and trauma-based approach to treatment using real life case studies and examples
  • Distinguish and adapt core concepts of cultural competency to work effectively with other collectivist cultures beyond the South Asian community
